Information for Landlords

A property owner or landlord is a person who owns a property and rents it out to a tenant. It is referred to as a 'Lessor' in the Residential Tenancies and Rooming Accommodation Act 2008 (the Act).

The RTA publication Managing general tenancies in Queensland contains information for managers of general tenancies and helps them understand their rights and responsibilities when managing rental accommodation, such as houses and units, in Queensland.

Property owners and landlords who manage their own properties need to familiarise themselves with the legislation.

A property owner or landlord who employs an agent to manage their property should also be familiar with the Property Occupations Act 2014 (PDF 820KB) and the relevant Regulation (PDF 355KB).

As of 1 December 2014, the Property Occupations Act 2014 replaced the Property Agents and Motor Dealers Act 2000. Find out more about the new legislation at qld.gov.au/law.
